Musical theatre is the combination of singing, dancing and spoken word. There are usually themes such as love, revenge, comedy or drama. The emphasis on music is what distinguishes this form of entertainment from other productions set on stage such as opera and ballet. Contrary to popular belief, musical theatre is a relatively new addition to the arts. Music has been used in productions dating back to the Greeks and Romans, but musical theatre’s emergence is traced back to the 1800’s.

The popularity of the genre can be attributed to the technology of the era. Musical theatre predates radio, television and cinema. Members of towns visited theate halls and music venues to see plays for their entertainment. During those days, songs were incorporated into the shows to illustrate a particular emotion characters were having. For example, a sad character might sing an emotional ballad to convey such feelings.

Choreography is also a key element of musical theatre. Dancing often provides characters with another way to demonstrate their inner feelings for the audience’s understanding. Musical productions that take place today incorporate new technology to create elaborate productions not possible in the 20th century. Composers are also incorporated to create scores that sometimes become big hits on the radio.

Musicals have changed a lot over the last century, in leaps and bounds as people and society continue to transform. While they still involve music, dancing, and acting, many musicals today have a different style across the board. The overall lifestyle in the early 1900′s painted the stages with entirely different dances and songs. Theater during war time and the Great Depression sometimes aided those in times of stress and hardship. It wasn’t only about selling tickets; musicals were about leaving people with a sense of joy and hope.

There is one thing that will not change about musicals – they paint a picture of an alternate, interesting world for everyone who watches them. A musical world is one that expresses emotions through song, and the occasional or full-on dance. A musical during the Roaring Twenties may have a lot of tap dancing and jazz, with a romantic couple and a stairway to the castle tower. A musical in 2012 could include pop music and hip hop dance, and a stage filled with people and props. They will continue to develop in style, and the audience will always come to enjoy the twists and turns of the exciting world of the musical.

New York City is one of the most frequently visited tourist towns. People come from all over the world to see what New York City is all about. While in the Big Apple, many people want to see a Broadway play, but decide against it due to the price. How much does a Broadway ticket actually cost? Well, it depends on a few things.

1. What Show Do You Want To See?
If the show you want to see is extremely popular, like Wicked or The Lion King, the tickets will be more expensive. The price is based on the demand to see it. If more people want to see a particular show, then the price goes up.

2. Where Do You Want To Sit?
If you are okay sitting in the second balcony, you can get tickets for fairly cheap. If you need to sit in the front row, your tickets will be more expensive.

3. What You Are Willing To Do?
Some shows have options for cheaper tickets. First, there are lotteries, where you have to win a raffle to get cheap tickets. Second, there are rush tickets, which you have to purchase when the Box Office first opens. Last, there are TKTS booths that offer discounted ticket prices.

Broadway tickets range from $20-$300 depending on your preferences.

Musical theatre has been in existence since the Greeks and Romans added music to their plays. Through the many years, musical theatre has evolved from something primarily for the upper classes into a form of entertainment that anyone could enjoy if one knows where to look. Musical theatre has gone from something “Mom and Dad did when they went out”, to something the kids watch on television on a regular basis. While this isn’t altogether a bad thing, where did this sudden “younger generation” interest come from?
Musical theatre has evolved from the Greeks and Romans adding musical bits, to entire dialogues being sung between characters. Both American and international musicals have gone from operatic type musicals to musicals that either started onstage and became a movie or vice versa. Some of the more recognizable musicals (Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera) began as stage productions and were turned into movies later. More recently however, movies such as High School Musical were performed onstage after being filmed. Although Les Mis and Phantom are international and High School Musical is American, doesn’t mean that there are differences between the two other than musical stylings. It just means that as music styles and generations change, so will styles and audiences. So, let’s all look in our local newspaper or online and see what is playing at a venue near us. Be it a classical venue or the local high school, let’s go see a musical! You thought this was good? Brace yourself: Music Theatre announces 2013 season, includes ‘Les Miz’ and ‘Spamalot’

While the Great Depression, leaving little money to spend on entertainment, affected theatre audience members around the world there were a variety of about 13 different stage shows that set the stage for some of the most popular musicals ever.

The start of the 1930s continued the lighthearted dancing and singing with stars such as Fred Astaire and his sister Adele. Ethel Merman was also a star in musical theater in the 1930s, gaining the title First Lady of musical theater performing in 1934 in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. On Your Toes</ i> in 1936 was the first use of classical dance in a theatrical way for a Broadway Musical. Additionally, Hellzapoppin performed in 1938 held the longest Broadway record of 1,404 performances until five years later when Oklahoma! took its place.

The Great Depression also brought about the first musical satire performed for musical theater in 1931 with Of Thee I Sing; this was later awarded a Pulitzer Prize. In 1933, Ethel Waters performed in the first musical theater of As Thousands Cheer to star an African-American alongside white actors. Another popular production was Porgy and Bess in 1935 with an all African-American cast and a blend of music, which paved the way for future musicals such as the West Side Story.

In today’s world, it is hard to decide what to do when going out for the night. Couples are constantly searching for new and exciting adventures to participate in. After a while, the same old dinner and a movie start to get repetitive and boring. The couple greatly wants to find something new to do. When living in a small city, this may seem as if it is impossible for them to come across. Luckily for them, though, travel has become easier and cheaper today than it was before. They can gather a group of friends and split the cost of the travel expenses.

A new trend that many groups are participating in is going to watch musicals. These shows are quite entertaining and provide a lot for the group to converse about after the show. Unfortunately, many small cities do not have venues that have musicals showing. When this occurs, the group should plan a trip to a large city known for musicals, such as New York or Chicago, and enjoy the great display of singing and acting that is being put on exhibit. Tickets for musicals are fairly reasonable, and all who go to watch one agree that it is a great time.
